Player Review

Tariq Lamptey is a right back for Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton signed Lamptey from Chelsea for just £3.30 million in January 2020 and he impressed during his 9 Premier League appearances. Although the sample size is small with him playing a total of only 621 PB eligible minutes so far, he has shown strong PB potential. Lamptey crosses often, attempting 3.18 crosses per 90. Many of his crosses are low and drilled into dangerous areas. Although such crosses can sometimes lead to a goal, many are cleared by defenders and Lamptey had a very poor crossing accuracy of 14.1%. Nevertheless, showing his desire and ability to cross frequently could suggest that he will hit higher PB scores in the future. Lamptey is extremely quick and can use his pace in both attack and defence. When attacking, Lamptey uses his pace to dribble past opponents and he completed a very high 68% of his 3.33 attempted dribbles per 90. Defensively, Lamptey uses his defensive awareness and rapid pace to make a high 2.42 interceptions per 90 by quickly accelerating ahead of the opposition that is expecting to receive the ball. Overall, Lamptey may struggle to earn dividends whilst at Brighton due to only completing an average of 26 passes per 90 and Brighton failing to win regularly with just a 23% win rate during the 2019-2020 season. Longer term, Lamptey's potential to earn dividends could improve because he could secure a move to a stronger team and he also has an outside chance of breaking into the England national side, though he will have to compete with a number of other very high quality, young English right backs.

Price Analysis

Tariq Lamptey IPO'd on 22/01/20 at £1.45. Lamptey's price has increased a fair amount since his IPO, up to a peak of £1.87 and he currently has a market price of £1.85 with an instant sell price of £1.42. Lamptey is unlikely to earn matchday dividends often whilst at Brighton and so he appears to have a relatively high price given his potential dividend return next season. As an England youth international who has potential to suit the PB matrix, Lamptey's price ceiling is fairly high. However, Lamptey will struggle to break into the England first team as the right back position is likely to be covered by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the future and there are other young options such as Reece James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka that Lamptey will have to compete with. Lamptey's price may partly be so high due to comparative pricing to other young, English full backs that have much higher prices. However, until Lamptey plays for a strong Premier League team he is unlikely to earn matchday dividends regularly. At his current price, Lamptey may not be particularly strong value given his low chance of earning dividends in the short term. Once the full order book system is implemented, his spread could tighten. Furthermore, Lamptey could gain transfer links in January 2021 if he has a strong start to the 2020-2021 season.
